Grasby.

Common hawthornHere at ESL we believe in taking our skills and enthusiasm out into the community, to help encourage young and old to have a better understanding and appreciation of the beauty and abundance of their local wildlife, flora and landscape.

ESL has for some time now been heavily involved in ongoing local village mapping projects. These Parish Environmental Schemes have shown that with a little funding and a guiding hand, great steps can be taken towards raising awareness and understanding of what our countryside has to offer.

We recently became involved in a project in Grasby, a small Lincolnshire village that has started mapping its hedgerows and ponds, discovering the history, archeology and diversity of what lies within their parish boundaries

With a little help from Brian our resident expert botanist, enthusiastic local people of all ages were shown basic survey and identification methods giving them the confidence to pursue this hugely enjoyable and rewarding journey of discovery.

The day was a complete success, beginning with tea and biscuits and a brief informal chat about relevant laws and regulations, methodology and a big bag of examples for some identification tips! Then out into the field for a few hours, to investigate the thriving summer hedgerows.

Guelder-roseAfter an exciting afternoon the day drew to a close with lively discussion and more tea and biscuits.

Feedback was immediate and positive, with another outing arranged later in the year with this animated and enthused group of local people.
